What’s happened to Historic Fort Wool:
- After 35 years as publicly accessible tourist site, Fort Wool has been transformed into a restricted seabird nesting habitat within weeks without public input due to the HRBT expansion on South Island.
Restoring Historic Fort Wool to the public requires:
- Get a legally binding commitment from the state to locate, pay for and implement a permanent nesting site for the birds that would not interfere with preservation or public enjoyment of Fort Wool, including restoring Fort to status quo ante.
- Stabilize the fort’s structures, especially the 3rd System casemates and the WW2 BC Tower. We need an independent engineering study, funding requirements, and who will fund and do this work.
- Access to the island and Fort – the state needs to repair or replace this island’s dock and/or build a walkway from South Island over the rip rap.
- The state to provide clearance that the Fort is safe for daily tours with the City of Hampton managing the fort.
- Commitment to annual funding to keep Fort Wool safe and accessible for another 35 years.
We need your help to convince the Commonwealth and City of Hampton to restore Historic Fort Wool to the citizens of Virginia and rest of the United States.
